Fitness equipment lubricant is one of the cheapest and most effective tools in your maintenance arsenal. If you have a treadmill or similar machine in your home or work at a facility with fitness equipment, it is very important to ensure everything functions smoothly. Excess friction on a treadmill will cause a host of problems to your machine including belt wear, motor failure, and potential safety hazards. So what should you use?

How to choose the right lubricant for your fitness equipment.

Most people have a can of WD-40 kicking around the house. It is often the go-to solution for squeaky doors and other various home uses. However, it is not a good idea to use it as a fitness equipment lubricant. We strongly recommend you avoid using it on a treadmill, elliptical, or any other type of exercise equipment.

Let us explain. First of all, WD-40 isn’t ACTUALLY a lubricant. The Letters WD stand for “water displacement”. It is actually intended for cleaning purposes, NOT lubrication. In fact, WD-40 will dry up within moments. Thus leaving no lubrication at all where it was applied. It will destroy bearings on fitness equipment within a matter of days.

So what SHOULD you use?

Many of our customers like to save a little money by performing routine maintenance on their equipment themselves. Which is great! But it is important to use the correct tools. When customers ask us what kinds of lubricant to use on their machines, we have a few options that we like to use here at our workshop.

Prosource Approved Fitness Equipment Lubricants:

  1. For treadmills, use a silicone wax that is specifically designed for treadmill lubrication.
  2. For ellipticals, applying grease onto the bushings is your best bet since the bearings are sealed.
  3. And finally, for strength equipment you want to be sure you are using a 100% silicone lubricant.

These products are specifically engineered for use as fitness equipment lubricant. In fact, our service and delivery technicians use them every day. Stick to these tried and true options and your machine will stay in great shape for a long time. And of course, if you are still unsure about what to use for your machine, contact the manufacturer to see what they have to say.
